"Daniel J. Dykstra, dean of the University of Utah's College of Law in the 1950s and early 1960s, has died after a long battle with cancer. He was 84.
Mr. Dykstra, who lived in El Macero, Calif., died March 29, 2000. He was a law professor at the university from 1949 to '65 and served as academic vice president for two years in the early 1960s. He kept ties to the law school and in 1988 taught a business regulation class.
U. president emeritus Alfred C. Emery said Mr. Dykstra "would rank as one of the finest teachers we've had at the College of Law."
Mr. Dykstra expanded the law school's reputation by requiring faculty members to do research and publish their work to gain promotions. He also helped see that new facilities were built in the schools of medicine, engineering and law.
In 1971, Mr. Dykstra became dean of the University of California-Davis School of Law, a role he served until 1974. He also spent several years as professor there before retiring in 1995.
A memorial service will be May 5 at UC Davis School of Law." ( Associated Press, Published: Monday, April 10 2000 12:00 a.m. MDT)
